Choosing the right grow medium for your garden is a critical decision that should be weighed against a series of factors and carefully chosen. Your media serves as a matrix through which your nutrient solution will be disseminated and as a result of this relationship it is imperative that your media is a seamless extension of the system or method you choose. The physical properties of your media will dictate how well your media will drain, retain moisture, influence pH, harbor bacteria (good and bad), as well as limit how much air is entrained in the voids. These parameters must be constrained and their ranges defined; for the crop you are cultivating depends on it. Unfortunately, there are no magic medias currently available that work in every system or environment. It is up to you to make the decision which media you think enhances the overall functionality of your system. This can be attained in a fairly straightforward fashion by educating yourself about how your garden functions. Is your garden flood and drain? Is it a deep-water culture? Do you top drip? Is it a NFT system? These questions will help you decide what media is right for you. You may want more residence time from your media if you prefer to water less or you are in a drain to waste system. You may want to use an aggregate or other free draining media to capitalize on the advantages of a NFT system or Aeroponic setup. These are the types of questions you should consider when choosing your media.
